The story behind Figgy
Figs are such ordinary things to me. They remind me of everyday moments, a trip to the market, something sitting on the kitchen counter, cutting one open without really thinking about it.
But when I started looking closely at a fig, I couldn’t believe how much was there.
The skin is imperfect and delicate, and inside there are hundreds of tiny seeds, folds, shadows and changes in colour. Something so familiar suddenly became incredibly intricate.
So I started drawing it.
I spent hours and hours following all those little details. The more I looked, the more I found. What I thought would be a simple study became a much slower process of really paying attention to something I might normally have overlooked.
I think that’s what Figgy is really about.
The beauty in the things we see all the time. The things that become so familiar that we stop noticing them.
Sometimes you just have to look a little closer.
